Today we are talking about talking about being given recommendations
and demands from others. This concept is pretty similar to talking about
things that we want to do, so we can apply this to talking about what we want
other people to do.
If you're not well, you should drink Samahan.
Oya sanipa næthanam,Samahan bonna oune.
ඔය සනීප නැතනම්, සමහාන්, බොන්න ඕනෙ
This sentence implies that the speaker wants you to drink Samahan if you get sick.
Should I wash this plate?
Me pingang eka hodhanna oune da?
මෙ පිංඅං එක හෝදන්න ඕනෙ ද?
This sentence is essentially asking whether someone wants the speaker to wash the
dish, which is why you can use oune in this context.
I want you to give this to Dilshan.
Mata oya me Dilshanta denna oune.
මට ඔය මෙ දිල්ෂන්ට දෙන්න ඕනෙ

Semi-related question - what resources do you use to study Sinhala? I have specifically been looking for some kind of trustworthy bilingual dictionary, and also to eventually use a monolingual one as well. Do you have any recommendations?

ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, my main resource is actually my parents, who are both native speakers of Sinhala. I created this blog because I realize that not everyone who wants to learn Sinhala has access to a native speaker. However, I do have a few recommendations for resources:
1. The Lazy But Smart Sinhala blog:
This is by far the most user-friendly resource I have been able to find. The lessons are really well-written and entertaining. The only downside is that it hasn't been updated since 2017.

2. Youtube Videos:
Youtube's popularity in Sri Lanka has really exploded, so you can find many tv programs such as teledramas, the news, and singing-reality shows among many other things. My favorite way to learn from Youtube is by watching short skits. I like these because they are bite-sized, easy to follow, and can give you some perspective into Sri Lankan humor if you are not accustomed to it. Some examples of channels that make these kinds of videos include Lochi and Gehan and Blok.
As far as dictionaries go, I personally have not really been using them. The best thing I could suggest is going to https://www.lexilogos.com/english/sinhala_dictionary.htm, which is a portal for several different dictionaries. If I find any other good quality dictionaries, I will be sure to post it on the blog.
It has definitely been a while since I've gone looking for Sinhala resources, and in that time, there seem to have been a major increase. I have not checked them out, so I do not feel comfortable recommending them just yet. Sometime in the next week or so, I will work on setting up a page that has these resources. I will update it when I find anything that might be of use to you guys.
