Ayubowan!
Today I will be exploring the idea of “only” in Sinhala. Let’s jump right in!
He only eats bread.
Eyaa pang vitharayi kanawaa.
එයා පාන් විතරයි කනවා.
The word here to note is “vitharayi” which almost directly translates to “only” in English.
Since Sinhala word order is a little more flexible than English, you could put “vitharayi”
at the end of the sentence, but I prefer to put it after the noun.
She only speaks English.
Eyaa engrishi vitharayi kathakaranawa.
ඇය ඉංග්රීසි විතරයි කතා කරනවා.
Only I am at home.
Mama vitharayi gedarata inawaa.
මම විතරයි ගෙදරට ඉනවා.
That’s all for this lesson! Stay tuned for the next one on June 28th!
