Future Tense Part 2: With uncertainty: Sinhala Grammar #53

 Today we will be learning about the future tense. There are two aspects to the future tense.

I am covering second in this lesson.

To reiterate, these are the two concepts:

  1. Accepting/ Confirming that something may happen

  2. Suggesting the possibility that something may happen

Use this link to read Lesson #52 on the first concept:

How it’s formed

Some formations of this tense are irregular, but this is the general pattern:

Kanna -> Kayi

න්න  -> කයි

Bonna -> Boi

බොන්න -> බෝ

As far as I understand, i & yi (ඉ & යි) are pronounced the same way. However, I’m not sure as to which one I should use when spelling. Let me know if any of you have any insight about this!

When can this be used?

  1. When you are not sure if you or someone else will do something

  2. When you are describing what someone other than yourself will do.

Examples:

Will (you) drink tea?

(Oyaa) the boida?

(ඔයා) තේ බෝඉද

He will do his work after he comes home.

Eyaa vada karayi gedarata enahama.

එයා වැඩ කරයි ගෙදරට  එනහම.

I might talk to her tomorrow.

Mama heta eyaata kathakarayi.

මම හෙට එයාට කතාකරයි.

That’s it for this lesson! If you have any questions or comments, leave them down below.

From now on, I will be working on practicing the concepts that I have already posted about, so I will be uploading the material that I create as I review. Tune in on June 12th for the next post.

Thanks for reading!
