Until-: Sinhala Grammar #44

 Ayubowan!

Today we will be learning about the concept of “until”. Let’s get started with the first example:

Until I come home, I won’t be able to eat.

Mama gedara ennakang mata kanna bæ.

මම ගෙදර එනකං මට කන්න බැ.

In order to form this structure, you would need to take the -na form of the verb and

add kang/kal to the end of the verb. You can pick whichever form you would prefer,

but kal comes from the word kale, which means time or occasion. Let’s look at a few

more examples:

We couldn’t go inside until we took off our shoes.

Apita æthulata yanna bæri vuna ape sapathu gælava gannakang.

අපිට ඇතුළට යන්න බැරි වුණා අපේ සපතු ගැලව ගන්නකං.

I slept until morning. (I slept until it became the day.)

මම උදේ වෙනකං නිදාගත්තා

The bus did not leave until he got on.

Eyaa naginakang bas eka pitath vune næ.

එයා නගිනකං බස් එක පිටත් වුණේ නැ.

That’s it for this lesson. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them down

below! Stay tuned for the next lesson on February 22nd. Thank you for reading!
