More than/ Less than-: Sinhala Grammar #37

Today we will be learning about the Sinhala equivalent of a comparative adjective.

Let’s get right into it with the first example sentence.

I am taller than you.

Mama oyaata vadaa usayi.

මම ඔයාට වඩා උසයි

Instead of modifying the adjective of the sentence to be comparative, we keep the 

adjective the same as we would in a normal sentence, but we add the word vadaa 

after the object of the sentence. Let’s look at another example. 

America is larger than Sri Lanka.

Amerikava Sri Lankavata vadaa vishalayi.

ඇමරිකාව ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට වඩා විශාලය. 

An important thing to note is that the object of the sentence is that it should have -ta 

added to the end. Another way you could think about this is that the object is in a

different place than the subject is.

When talking about a subject that is less than an object, we use the exact same formula.

Here’s an example:

I am shorter than my younger brother.

Mama mage malita vadaa keti.

මම මගේ මලීට වඩා කෙටි.

The roti I made is less tasty than the one my mom made.

Mama hadapu roti Amma hadapu roti valata vada adu rasayi.

මම හදපු රොටී අම්මා හදපු රොටි වලට වඩා අඩු රසයි.

Adu rasayi literally translates to a lessening of deliciousness. Adu venavaa translates to

something becoming less.
