Weekly Discussion #2: Sri Lankan Food
Ayubowan!
The discussion for today is Sri Lankan food! Have you tried any Sri Lankan dishes?
If so, what are your favorites? If not, is there anything you want to try? My favorite
Sri Lankan dish to eat at home is chicken curry, especially if it's spicy. There are also
some dishes that I really like but can only get when I'm in Sri Lanka. If you are ever
in Sri Lanka, I would definitely recommend getting banana leaf rice and apple cake.
Also, I would really recommend trying Sri Lankan fast food. This may seem like a
strange recommendation, but Sri Lankans put a really nice spin on western food.
Dinemore is a really awesome sandwich shop that I believe is exclusive only to Sri Lanka
and the Maldives.
Anyways, I would really love to read about your experiences with Sri Lankan food!

Weekly Discussion #1: Entertainment in Sinhala
Ayubowan!
I hope everyone is doing well! Today's discussion will be about immersion
material used to become more familiar with Sinhala. Unfortunately, I don't
immerse myself in Sinhala as much as I probably should, but I mainly watch
Youtube, so I try to find material there.
An easy way to find more Sinhala content on Youtube is by changing the
location setting on your Youtube channel to Sri Lanka. I got this idea from the
Youtube channel Matt vs. Japan. I really like doing this because it's a good way
to understand how Sri Lankan people think.
Do you guys like watching Sinhala teledramas or listening to Sinhala music.
I would love to know what kinds of things interest you. Maybe we can even help
recommend things to each other, so feel free to leave comments on this post!
Thank you!

Yet & Already (Part 2): Sinhala Grammar #29
Hello Everyone!
Today will be the second part of the lesson talking about the concepts of
‘Yet’ and ‘Already’. I decided to put these two concepts together, because
they are opposites conceptually. I decided to use the same sample sentences
from last week just so that we can contrast the two concepts.
Let’s get into it with our first sample sentence:
I already ate.
Mama dhanathamath kǣvaa.
මම දැනටමත් කෑවා
As you can see, this is a fairly simple grammar structure which is kind of similar
to that of English. The word ‘dhanathamath’ is more on the formal side, but this
is still usable and understandable. The reason I chose to include this word instead
of the more informal structure was because the informal structure deals with some
new grammar topics I haven’t fully comprehended yet. When I feel like I can better
cover the informal version of this structure, I will probably edit this post and write an
update post to notify you that it is available to read.
To solidify this concept, let’s look at two more examples:
I already drank (my) tea.
Mama dhanathamath the biuvaa.
මම දැනටමත් මගේ තේ
(Did you) already do (your) homework?
Gedara vaeda dhanathamath karada?
ගෙධර වැඩ දැනටමත් කරාද?
That’s all for this lesson! If you have any questions or comments, as always,
please let me know down below.
I also wanted to let you guys know that the blog will be on a hiatus from
now until May 2nd. However, this is only a hiatus in terms of the posting of
grammar lessons. I want to get to know my readers a little better, so I will be
posting a question or two asking about your experiences with learning Sinhala and
Sri Lankan culture. I’ll post a new question every Monday at 12AM PST.
It would be really great to hear from you guys!
Thank you for reading!
