Duration of an event: Sinhala Grammar #49

Ayubowan!

Today we will be learning how to describe the duration of an action. This is

somewhat of a grammar and vocabulary lesson, as we will be learning the names

for the different units of time.

The general formula for this concept is;

Large unit of time (year/month/day etc.), number, verb

The number will be changed into a different form. I am not quite sure why this

occurs, but using these numbers requires practice.

(I) studied at that school for two years.

E paasale avurudu dekak igenagaththaa.

ඒ පාසලේ අවුරුදු දෙකක් ඉගෙනගත්තා.

In three months, your package will arrive.

Maasa thunakin oyage pækejaya pæmine.

මාස තුනකින් ඔයාගේ පැකේජය පැමිණේ.

She won’t be at home for four weeks.

Æya sathi hatharak gedara ine næ.

ඇය සති හතරක් ගෙදර ඉනේ නැ.

I read this book in five days.

Mama me potha davas pakin kiyeuwa.

මම මේ පොත දවස් පහකින් කියෙව්වා

(I) slept for six hours.

Pæya hayak nidhagatha.

පැය හයක් නිදාගත්තා.

That’s all for this lesson! If you have any questions or comments, please leave

them down below. Stay tuned for the next lesson on May 24th at 12 AM PST.

Thank you for reading!
